Unavailable medicines

Commercialised medicinal products can be unavailable for two reasons:
• a temporary suspension of the marketing (temporary unavailability), for example following production problems
or
• or a permanent marketing cessation.

Temporary suspension of the marketing (temporary unavailability)

List of the medicinal products for human or veterinary use of which the holder of the marketing authorisation/registration has notified a temporary unavailability. (see French version - pdf)

List of the medicinal products for human or veterinary use of which the holder of the marketing authorisation/registration has notified a temporary unavailability. (see French version - Excel)

They are medicinal products that are currently temporary unavailable and of which the holder of the marketing authorisation/registration has notified in advance to the famhp that these are commercialised in Belgium.

This list is updated every day (working days) according to the information provided by the holders of the marketing/registration authorisation of the medicinal products who must inform the famhp about the temporary unavailabilities that are expected to last more than 14 days. (“Commercialisation - Unavailability” and circular 605 (French version)).

Important remarks

• In case of an unavailability of less than 14 days, it is possible that the medicinal product be not available in certain pharmacies or at veterinarians but the medicinal product is not mentioned in this list.
• It may also happen that the medicinal product, because of a local distribution problem, is not available in some pharmacies or at some veterinarians. It is then not a real unavailability and the medicinal product is therefore not mentioned on this list.
• If the holder of a marketing authorisation/registration has not notified to the famhp the temporary unavailability (longer than 14 days) of a medicinal product, as he should have done, this medicinal product is not mentioned on the above-mentioned list but the medicinal product can, however, be unavailable on site.
• A medicinal product that is mentioned as unavailable after notification by the holder of a marketing authorisation/registration, can still be available for some time in some

pharmacies, at certain veterinarians and wholesalers.

If a doctor, a pharmacist or a patient informs the famhp that a medicinal product is not available, but that this medicinal product is not included in the list because it was not notified by the holder of a marketing authorisation/registration, an employee of the famhp contacts the firm and asks it to inform the famhp about the current situation on site.

In the most cases, the temporary unavailability of medicinal products does not create a problem for the patient since therapeutic alternatives often exist (medicines with similar composition and same administration route of medicinal products from the same pharmacological class). Patients can ask their doctor and/or pharmacist for advice. Owners of animals can ask their vet and/or pharmacist.

Sometimes, unavailability can, however, cause some problems for the treatment of certain patients. Some of the concerned medicinal products are indicated below with information that is useful for the healthcare professionals.

Permanent marketing cessation

In the most cases, the permanent marketing cessation cause no problem since therapeutic alternatives exist.

In some cases, the permanent marketing cessation can cause a problem for the treatment of the patient and measures are taken by the famhp, in consultation with the holder of the authorisation/registration, in order to enable doctors to find the best possible solution for the treatment of the concerned patients.
