Methadone and buprenorphine: a reminder of the safety measures

Substitution treatment for opiates is a medicinal treatment for patients dependent on opiates. The drugs used in this context contain methadone or buprenorphine, which are powerful morphinomimetics. They are effective in the treatment of the dependence on opiates, including reducing the abstinence syndrome. They are classified as narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances. These drugs require special precautions for use and a very strict monitoring of patients.

Drugs containing methadone or buprenorphine can cause respiratory depression and put children’s lives in danger if accidentally consumed.

Their prescription and delivery are strictly regulated.

To avoid any risk of accidents among children, the legislation regulating substitution treatment stipulates that these drugs must be delivered in a packaging with a safety device for children.
