Recommendations for the use of suppositories containing essential oils for babies and young children

Following the recent news in the media about suppositories containing essential oils for babies and young children, the FAMHP woulod like to remind readers of its communication of 27th September 2011.

The recommendations of the FAMHP in this context remain unchanged:

"As a precautionary measure and pending a thorough and complete evaluation of registration dossiers of these suppositories, the FAMHP therefore encourages parents to be very careful and invites them to follow strictly the advice of the physician-prescriber or pharmacist. The FAMHP also advises parents not to use these suppositories on their own initiative for children under 30 months and for children with a history of febrile seizures or epilepsy, or a recent history of anorectal lesions.

The FAMHP is very careful to monitor these files and ensure they are treated in the shortest possible time."
